Josh’s Top 25

Another week in and another questionable AP poll.  Here’s how yours truly would rank ’em:

Real AP Poll:

  1. Ohio State (42)
  2. Michigan State (7)
  3. Ole Miss (11) / TCU
  4. no team, tie at third
  5. Baylor
  6. Notre Dame
  7. Georgia
  8. LSU (1) – Who is the one person who thinks LSU is the best team in the nation?  They don’t have a quarterback, people!
  9. UCLA
  10. Florida State
  11. Clemson
  12. Alabama – Yes because losing by six at home when you have 5 turnovers to what is now a top 5 ranked team warrants dropping 10 places.
  13. Oregon
  14. Texas A&M
  15. Oklahoma
  16. Arizona
  17. Northwestern
  18. Utah
  19. USC
  20. Georgia Tech – Ah yes, because losing by 8 on the road again a top 10 team justifies free falling six places.
  21. Stanford
  22. Wisconsin / BYU
  23. no team, tie at 22nd
  24. Oklahoma State
  25. Missouri – Why is this team still ranked?!?  I had ’em out last week!

My Top 25:

  1. Ohio State – I was tempted to move them but that defense is…wow
  2. Michigan State
  3. Ole Miss
  4. Baylor – Ohh, stirring the Big 12 pot.  Honestly, the Bears are a tad healthier than TCU so they get the slight nod.
  5. TCU
  6. Georgia – Finally saw the team I predicted to win the SEC East on the podcast show up.
  7. UCLA – Rosen had a bad game, yes – but it was against a strong BYU team and Paul Perkins is a beast.
  8. Oregon
  9. Alabama
  10. Notre Dame – They are still banged up but compared to what the teams did I had ranked around them, they were the best looking so I give them the bump.
  11. USC – Look at the teams 12-14 and tell me they have a better qb than the Trojans.  Exactly.
  12. LSU – Still not sold on how one-dimensional they are.  I think the game said more about how awful Auburn is then anything else.
  13. Clemson
  14. Florida State – I don’t think Golson will lead this team to the college football playoffs.
  15. Oklahoma
  16. Texas A&M – Splitting hairs with these two but I think OU’s win at Tennessee is more impressive than A&M’s win in Houston over Arizona State.
  17. Arizona
  18. Georgia Tech
  19. Utah
  20. BYU
  21. Houston
  22. Wisconsin
  23. Temple
  24. Northwestern – The defense is good, sure but they completed just 9 or 23 passes for 70 yards and had 2 picks.  A special teams touchdown was needed to escape.  I’m not saying they can’t keep climbing but I’m also going to tap the breaks a little bit.
  25. Texas Tech – Let’s see them back up the hot 3-0 start with a win (or competitive game) over TCU.

Justifiable Rage:

Where’s Oklahoma State?  Call me when they’ve played someone.  Their 3-0 record comes against Central Michigan, Central Arkansas and Central Texas.  Kidding, the last game was against UTSA.  They are at Texas to open the league.  I know the Longhorns aren’t great, but it is a conference road game.

You dropped Tennessee!  I did.  I think Tech starting out 3-0, including a win at Arkansas is a pinch better than what the Vols have done so far, which includes losing at home with a sizable lead they gave away.

Uhh, Stanford bro.  I know, I know a tough one.  Between my bottom set of teams ranked 20-25 the Cardinal have the most impressive win and it came on the road….

  • BYU has a win over a ranked team (Boise at the time) and a road win.  They also have a 1-point loss at a top-10 UCLA team.  That’s 3 strong performances.  Has Stanford had 3 strong performances?  No.
  • Next is Houston and Temple.  Both are undefeated and both have wins over power-5 teams, Houston’s coming on the road.  Stanford has a loss and a flat performance against terrible UCF.
  • Wisconsin hung with Alabama and has two strong performances since.  Stanford has the lone strong game.
  • Northwestern beat Stanford.
  • Texas Tech – Undefeated and beat Arkansas on the road.

To rank Stanford, means bumping one of those six teams who have yet to have multiple bad performances.  Stanford was terrible at Northwestern and flat against UCF.  One upset doesn’t launch you back into the polls in my book.

League Breakdown:

5 – Pac 12, SEC

4 – Big 12, Big Ten

3 – ACC

2 – American, Independent
